Today's Devotion
"But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me" (Romans 7:23).

There's a war going on!... Hold that thought while you read Galatians 5:16-17:

"But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please" (NASB).

There's a tug-o-war waging within us. It's a civil war. There's a battle going on inside of us.

What's going on? Why does that happen? I feel it, and I know you feel it. The Bible says there's something called the 'law of sin' or the 'flesh,' it's not a 'nature.' Nature is what determines who you are. Dogs bark because they have a dog's nature. We're new creations with a new nature. The old person that made us children of wrath is gone, but we still have the flesh to deal with. That's the result of Adam's sin. There's no way we can get rid of the flesh. Anyone born into the human race is going to have the flesh, unless they're born supernaturally.

It's the flesh versus our new nature, the Spirit of God. The flesh is that thing inside of us that, when we're enticed or tempted, responds to sin. However our new nature is greater, more powerful, "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh."

"So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense" (1 Corinthians 1:20-23).
The LORD bless you and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine on you,
And be gracious to you;
The LORD lift up His countenance on you,
And give you peace.
