Today's Devotion
"He makes me lie down in green pastures..." (Psalm 23:2a, ESV).

It's a fact; sheep don't know when to lie down. Oftentimes, sheep will not rest. They have to be made to lie down. Believe it or not, they get so tense they will not take a rest, hmmm, does that sound familiar?

It's a fact that sheep can't rest if they are:
  • Afraid
  • Hungry
  • Tense and stressed out
They won't rest! They just pace around and around because they're afraid. Sheep are really high strung animals, and sometimes the shepherd has to go over and push one down and say, "Lay down! Go to sleep!"

But, you see, He's prepared this lush, green pasture, this beautifully carpeted meadow for you to lie down in. He doesn't make you or me lie down on rocks and thorns. This Psalm says, "He makes me lie down in green pastures."

Oh, the peace and rest we miss because we won't come to Him with the things that cause us to fear. Way too often we don't come to Him with the things that bring us stress and make us uptight. We don't come to Him for food, and we wear our little selves out and we collapse.

As a result, there are times that God will come and He'll make you lie down. There've been a number of times in my life when I've been flat on my back. I've been so sick, or in so much pain, that I didn't want to move. During those times, the Holy Spirit would just speak to my heart and say: "Hey, it's been a long time since we've really spent quality time together, hasn't it?" I'd answer, "Yeah." Then He would go on to say, "Well, We were just thinking that, if the only way We could see you was when you were in bed, then We'd just make that possible right now. Here We are."

Jesus wants to lead us to rest. Don't get there the hard way!

"When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely" (1 Corinthians 13:11-12).

Reader Response
"As we find our happiness more and more in glorifying God rather than in having our own way, we find life a lot easier to take." This may be one of the two or three best things you've ever written. Thank you!
The LORD bless you and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine on you,
And be gracious to you;
The LORD lift up His countenance on you,
And give you peace.
