Today's Devotion
"He will rescue us because you are helping by praying for us. As a result, many will give thanks to God because so many people's prayers for our safety have been answered" (2 Corinthians 1:11).

Paul knew the power of prayer to affect the pagan world around him so he was quick to ask believers to "cover" him with a shield of prayer.

When we pray for those who spiritually feed us and lead us, we actually become spiritual partners with them! "Join me in my struggle by praying to God for me" (Romans 15:30, NIV).

Here's a guide for praying for spiritual leaders:

  • Pray for the proclamation of the Word. "Finally, my brothers, do pray for us here.  Pray that the Lord's message may go forward unhindered and may bring him glory, as it has done with you" (2 Thessalonians 3:1-2, NASB).
  • Pray for the protection of the leader. Anyone sharing the Word of God becomes a special target for spiritual attack (1 Corinthians 16:9).
  • Pray that their work will be pleasing. "Now I urge you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God for me, that I may be delivered from those who are disobedient in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may prove acceptable to the saints" (Romans 15:30-31, NASB).
  • Pray that they will have times of refreshing. "...strive together with me in your prayers to God for me, ...that I may come to you in joy by the will of God and find refreshing rest in your company" (Romans 15:30, 32, NASB).

"This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior. May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord" (2 Peter 1:1-2).
The LORD bless you and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine on you,
And be gracious to you;
The LORD lift up His countenance on you,
And give you peace.
